Con la llegada de las redes sociales muchos ámbitos de nuestra vida se han visto afectados, para bien o para mal estos mecanismos han cambiado la forma en la que muchas personas perciben la información y sobre todo las noticias y la actualidad del mundo. Al principio, las redes sociales ofrecían información que había que contrastar, pero solía ser información real. En los últimos tiempos han nacido las llamadas fake news que están haciendo mucho daño al periodismo y a la forma de consumir información en las redes sociales.
Por eso desde Bruselas se ha empezado a poner remedio a este problema y la Comisión Europea ha dado un paso hacia delante para intentar frenar el fenómeno de las noticias falsas y la desinformación que existe online y sobre todo en las redes sociales. Esta preocupación ha aumentado debido a la influencia que han tenido este tipo de noticias falsas en momentos tan importantes como el referéndum del Reino Unido para permanecer o no en la Unión Europea.
Aunque todavía se está en una fase inicial del mecanismo para acabar con esta práctica se han dado dos pequeños pasos: uno de ellos es el inicio de una consulta pública sobre este tipo de noticias falsas y la creación de un grupo de expertos para saber cómo afrontar estas noticias falsas.
El vicepresidente primero de la Comisión Europea, Frans Timmermans, ha declarado que estamos en un momento en el que es muy difícil controlar toda la información falsa que nos rodea. Por eso, quiere proporcionar mecanismos a los ciudadanos para poder detectar las noticias falsas. Lo que se pretende al final es llegar a una situación en la que puedan convivir la libertad de expresión, el pluralismo de todos los medios de comunicación y el derecho de las personas a obtener una información fiable y real.
El plazo para estudiar todas estas consultas y decidir cómo afrontar las fake news acaba el 23 de febrero de 2018. Algunas de las medidas que se pueden tomar después son, por un lado, la contratación de editores que controlen si estas informaciones son verdad y, por el otro, clasificar las noticias en Facebook en función de si son reales o no.
